Environmental
Implications of EU Enlargement |
The goal of this project is to use the opportunity for promoting
sustainable development given by the EU integration process. The project
has the following objectives: (1) to identify environmental implications
of the integration process and react to potential environmental risks,
(2) to keep the public and the government aware of these risks, (3) to
prepare appropriate policy recommendations to assist the government in
the process of integration and (4) to assist municipalities in their adaptation
to the EU requirements by providing information and expertise.
Project activities have included :
-
The PHARE project on Media Work, Awareness Raising and Training
project implemented as a sub-contractor of Haskoning Royal Dutch Engineers.
The project assisted the Ministry of Environment, as well as environmental
inspectorates, with tasks related to EU accession. In the framework of
the training section, a series of workshops wer organized, including: 2
courses on Environmental Communication, one workshop on Public
Participation, another on Preparation and Elaboration of Local Environmental
Action Plans and a symposium on European environmental legislation.
The media section of the project disseminated results of the program through
press releases, the Ministry newsletter, brochures, a press conference,
an exhibition, and the Ministry’s homepage. As a result of the program,
a large amount of useful information (such as studies, evaluation of
environmental policy and the process of legal harmonization and options
for future strategies) created within the PHARE project of the Ministry
of Environment became available to the general public.

issues.
